Aging-related endothelial dysfunction

Aging-related endothelial dysfunction - Project profile

Motivation

Aging is a major risk factor for the development of several cardiovascular diseases. Some cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis or hypertension are accompanied by a decreased endothelial function. Age-related endothelial dysfunction affects the balance between vasodilator and vasoconstriction substances in the endothelium. In addition, oxidative stress and inflammation seem to be the primary causes of age-related endothelial dysfunction.

Aims and Procedure

The aim of this project is to investigate whether cellular senescence has an impact on inflammatory processes and mitochondrial dysfunction, which may promote endothelial dysfunction. We also aim to examine the influence of intrinsic sex on age-related endothelial dysfunction.
