NeuroNation - Project profile

Motivation

With the introduction of the Digital Healthcare Act (Digitale-Versorgung-Gesetz or DVG), doctors can prescribe e-Health apps. In doing so, it aims to realize the potential of e-Health applications more thoroughly and bridge waiting times for treatment and therapy. Despite a large number of commercially available “brain training apps”, no computerized cognitive training has yet been approved as a digital health app (Digitale Gesundheitsanwendung or DiGA). Considering preclinical states such as mild cognitive impairment, which are accompanied by minor limitations in activities of daily living, it is necessary to intervene as early as possible.

Objectives and procedure

The primary goal of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a computerized cognitive training program (“NeuroNation MED”) in mild cognitive impairment. Thus, this project will conduct a multicenter, randomized controlled trial across Europe. In doing so, the effects of a 12-week cognitive training program with the app “NeuroNation MED” on cognitive performance, depression, health literacy and social participation are evaluated. A wait-list group serves as the control group.

Innovations and perspectives

High-quality study designs with representative samples are still sparse in the empirical evaluation of computerized cognitive training programs in mild cognitive impairment. Thus, the project contributes to closing this research gap.
