About the Department of Geriatrics
Under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Müller-Werdan the university Geriatrics (Gerontology), Charité- University Medical Center of Berlin consist of a clinic and an interdisciplinary research department. The department of Geriatrics and Gerontology is located at Campus Benjamin Franklin (CBF, station 46). Cooperation partner is the evangelic geriatric center Berlin. The interdisciplinary geriatric research group (RGG) comprises six working groups: Age and Technology Nutrition and Body composition Nursing Research Group The RGG has successfully carried out research projects in Geriatrics and metabolic diseases since 1990, often in cooperation with other renowned research institutes and groups nationally as well as internationally. Additionally, employees of Geriatrics are teaching in a model course program, so that students get an insight of the medical care of elderly patients.

Geriatrics at the Benjamin Franklin Campus
One of the first stationary geriatrics established within a university clinic setting was opened at the Benjamin Franklin Campus in February 2015. The geriatrics department, compromising of 18 stationary beds in the beginning, is ever since located within the ward unit, house 2, station 46A.
We treat geriatric, multimorbid patients with diseases counting to acute internal, neurological and orthopaedic medicine in the according to an early rehabilitation by an interdisciplinary team compromising doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, geriatric trained nurses and social workers. Frequent diagnoses among our patients are apoplexy, hip prosthesis after femoral neck fracture, decompensated heart failure, pneumonia and dementia. The aim of our rehabilitation is to re-integrate elder patients in their familiar environment after disease in consideration of their individual resources like physical and psychical abilities.
In cooperation with the Evangelische Geriatriezentrum Berlin (EGZB) we represent the academic geriatric medicine and therefore offer profound knowledge and expertise in treating geriatric patients.
